There's nothing quite like a Saturday morning at Wolfson College, University of Cambridge. The smell of brunch drifting in from the canteen, laptops open, textbooks out, and a room full of young people working alongside university students who genuinely want to see them succeed. That's The Bridge and we're delighted to say it's back for a brand new term starting Saturday 24th October.

If you've got a secondary school-aged child in or around Cambridge, or you're a young person reading this yourself, here's what The Bridge is all about, and why we'd love you to join us.

⸻

What is The Bridge?

The Bridge is CB Mentoring's flagship Saturday homework club, running every Saturday morning during term time at Wolfson College, University of Cambridge. It's a free, relaxed space where secondary school students can come along with their homework, coursework, revision, or any other work they're doing, and receive one-to-one support from Cambridge University student volunteers.

Whether it's untangling a tricky maths problem, getting a second pair of eyes on an English essay, working through science coursework, or just needing a quiet, focused space away from home to get stuck into schoolwork, our volunteers are there to help with core subjects like English, Maths and Science, as well as the wider curriculum; geography, history, PSHE and beyond.

Sessions run from 10am until 12 noon, and every session ends the best possible way: with a relaxed brunch together on campus. It's a lovely, informal way to wind down, get to know the volunteers, and hear a bit about what university life is really like.

We also invite guest speakers along throughout the term to talk about subjects and opportunities that might spark a bit of extra curiosity.

⸻

Open to everyone

CB Mentoring exists to champion Black and global majority young people in Cambridge, helping them build confidence, identity and a genuine sense of what's possible for their future. But The Bridge itself is open to all secondary school aged students, whatever your background. You don't need to be Black or from a global majority group to come along, everyone is genuinely welcome.

All we ask is that you bring something to work on. That could be set homework, revision, wider reading, or something from class you'd like to explore further. If you've got wifi-enabled devices you need, that's covered too.

⸻

Why families keep coming back

The Bridge isn't just about getting homework done (although that's a big part of it!). It's about young people spending time in a university environment, surrounded by peers who are also aiming high, and mentored by Cambridge students who act as genuine, relatable role models. For a lot of our young people, it's the first time they've spent real time on a university campus, and that familiarity matters. When you've walked the corridors, eaten in the dining hall, and chatted to the students over brunch, university stops being just an idea and instead, starts feeling like somewhere you belong.

⸻

New term, new start

Our new term kicks off on Saturday 24th October and runs right through to March, so there's plenty of time to make The Bridge a regular part of your Saturday routine. Whether you're joining us for the very first time or you're a familiar face coming back after the summer, everyone starts the term together.

A few practical notes:

  • When: Saturdays, 10am–12 noon, during term time (Michaelmas and Lent terms)
  • Where: Wolfson College, University of Cambridge
  • Who: Secondary school aged students — open to all
  • Cost: Free
  • What to bring: Homework, coursework, revision, or anything you're keen to work on
  • Top tip: Try to arrive 10-15 minutes before the 10am start so we can get going on time

And if life gets in the way one Saturday and you can't make it, no problem. Come along to as many or as few sessions as suits you. There's no pressure, just an open door every week.
